Labs

Labs turn one lab day into a clear checklist of Skill evaluations, Patient evaluations, and Sim Sessions. Faculty can prepare the work once, schedule it for a cohort, and follow each student’s progress while the activity is happening.

Who can use Labs?

Directors and Administrators can manage Labs. Instructors need the Can manage labs permission. Other faculty can view Labs and rosters in read-only mode.

Lab Templates and Labs

A Lab Template is a reusable plan for one lab day. It defines the profession, certification level, and checklist students are expected to work through. Build it once, then reuse or clone it for future cohorts.

A Lab is one assigned or completed use of a template. When you create a Lab, EMCE takes a snapshot of the template, creates the required evaluations, and tracks each student’s progress. Later changes to the template do not change Labs that already exist.

Lab requirements are separate from a cohort’s graduation requirements. The underlying Skill and Patient evaluations still count toward cohort requirements in the same way as evaluations created outside a Lab.

Requirement types

Each requirement describes one activity and the conditions needed for it to count as successful.

Requirement	Use it for
Skill	An individual student performing one isolated skill. Choose an Instructor or Peer evaluator and the minimum number of successful attempts.
Patient	An individual simulated patient encounter assigned to every selected student. Configure patient details, learning-objective minimums, and the skills every student must perform.
Sim Session	A team-based simulated call. Configure the scenario, team size, sessions per student, patient information, learning-objective expectations, and a list of skills that may be distributed among team members.

For a Patient requirement, every listed skill must be completed before the encounter satisfies the Lab requirement. For a Sim Session requirement, the skills are suggestions that the facilitator can assign to whichever team member performed them; every participant does not need to perform every skill. In an assigned Lab, Sim Session progress is based on approved participation in each required session, not on meeting score or skill minimums.

Choose Assign or Complete

When you use a template, choose the workflow that matches when results will be entered:

• Assign creates evaluations for students to complete later. It can also create Sim Sessions and organize students into teams.
• Complete records an activity that has already happened. Faculty can enter instructor-evaluated skill and patient results for the roster in one pass. Sim Sessions cannot be completed in bulk.

Lab progress is a guide

A student does not need to reach 100% for the work they completed to count. Each approved evaluation contributes independently to both Lab progress and, when applicable, cohort requirements.
